Final Construction of the Sundial

With the completed design on paper you are ready to construct the sundial using both art and science. Be careful to select a construction material that has desirable properties. Your local climate might require a durable material but the workability, weight, and tools required to construct the sundial should also be considered. Keep in mind the costs of materials, tools, transport, and painting of the final project.

Proper placement of the gnomon is very important. Even if the sundial face is precisely constructed, a poorly placed gnomon will waste all the previous effort. The gnomon should be aligned and securely attached to the sundial. Testing the position and alignment of the gnomon before final attachment is recommended. One common permanent method is to weld a steel gnomon to a support but there are other methods that work equally well. Details of construction methods are beyond the scope of the program.
