Dimensions of the Tube

w8.gif

In this screen the dimensions of the cylinder clock are input.

The requested parameters are:

RADIUS: This dimension refers to the radius of the tube, expressed in mm. A larger radius allows for more separation between the hour lines or a greater number of hour lines that will make reading the sundial easier and more accurate.

WIDTH: This dimension refers to the width of the tube along a longitudinal axis. The tube should be large enough to include all the required hour lines (minimum limit) but not too large to waste space that is unmarked with lines (maximum limit).

ANGLE: This angular measurement has the same meaning as in the case of the ring clock. This angle is analogous to the fixed angle of the gnomon. Two types of constructions are possible; one in which a sunray passes through a hole to fall on a shadowed surface, or a second in which an gnomon, similar to a traditional one, casts a shadow from its tip to a lighted surface.
